Meta-Search Engines

OASIS (Openly Available Sources Integrated Search) is a search tool developed at SUNY Geneseo’s Milne Library that aims to make the discovery of open content easier. OASIS currently searches open content from 73 different sources and contains 171,366 records.

Mason OER Metafinder (MOM) performs a search across 19 (and growing) different OER repositories and sources.

Textbooks

Barnes and Noble’s LoudCloud Courseware
LoudCloud is an initiative from Barnes & Noble that combines OER materials and low-cost courseware–ancillary materials, testing resources, analytics, etc.

The BCcampus Open Textbook Project (British Columbia)
The BCcampus library includes textbooks developed by Canadian authors as well as other texts that have been borrowed for use by instructors in British Columbia. Faculty reviews and ancillary resources are available for some textbooks.

Luminos (University of California Press)
Publishes a series of open access books that can be used by students at no cost.

Merlot
Items submitted to MERLOT are vetted by teams of peer reviewers with subject-area expertise. Materials on the site range widely from simulations, class activities, and media to case studies, open journal articles, and open textbooks.

OER Commons
Open educational resources in a variety of types, educational levels, and subject areas. Try the Advanced Search option to locate textbooks released for college-level courses–or look for other materials to supplement texts.

OpenStax
Specializes in creating materials for general education courses like Biology 101, Sociology and Calculus I – III. All textbooks have been peer-reviewed and vetted by the higher education community. OpenStax updates their textbooks over time and pairs each book with lists of added resources like slides and exercises that can be used in class. Some of these added resources are free while others are available for a fee.

Open Textbook Library (OTL)
Dozens of open textbooks that are currently in use at higher educational institutions or affiliated with a higher education institution, scholarly society, or professional organization. OTL also invites faculty reviews of the textbooks in the library.

Teaching Commons
OER published at a number of colleges and universities including Portland State University, University of Massachusetts, University of Pennsylvania, University of South Florida, the City University of New York, and Utah State University. To find open textbooks, select “textbooks” under “types of works.”

DOAJ is an online directory that indexes and provides access to quality open access, peer-reviewed journals.

SPARC – Open Access (Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition)
Open Access is the free, immediate, online availability of research articles, coupled with the rights to use these articles fully in the digital environment.

Open Images & Media

HippoCampus
Free academic resource site with multimedia content for middle-school, high-school and college general education subjects. A project of the National Repository of Online Courses (NROC) and the Monterey Institute for Technology and Education.

Artstor
A free, open-access library of images powered by ARTstor

NYPL Digital Gallery
Free and open access to over 800,000 images digitized from the The New York Public Library’s collections.

Getty Open Content Images
Images from the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Getty Research Institute available through the Open Content Program.
