Student Involvement

Student Life hosts a variety of events throughout the year, providing students with exciting opportunities to engage with campus life, build friendships, and create lasting memories. These events foster Bison spirit, leadership, and community involvement.

Traditions

At Nichols, we create a vibrant campus culture by honoring the traditions and signature events that define our college experience. These time-honored practices bring students, faculty, and staff together, fostering a sense of connection, pride, and belonging that strengthens our community and enriches campus life.

Welcome Week

Welcome Week at Nichols College kicks off with a lively carnival with rides, fair food, pop up vendors, and giveaways.

The week continues with a variety of engaging events designed to help students connect, explore campus resources, and celebrate community. Throughout the week, students can enjoy interactive workshops, themed socials, and outdoor activities that foster friendships, school spirit, and a sense of belonging on campus.

Welcome Weeks are hosted in August and January.

Pumpkin Fest

Pumpkin Fest is a celebration of Fall. Students can enjoy a variety of fall events including pumpkin carving, sweet treats, outdoor movie and fire pit nights, and so much more. This event is part of our Fall Fest, which features a week length of programming including Family and Friends Weekend.

Winter Fest: Light Up the Hill and Moonlight Breakfast

This annual celebration brings the Nichols College community together to embrace the holiday season. Between Thanksgiving and Winter Break, students can enjoy daily programming designed to spread cheer, including festive craft events, trips to local holiday markets, and much more to get everyone in the holiday spirit.

Light Up the Hill is a highlight of the season, featuring the lighting of the Christmas tree and Menorah in the dining hall. Each year, a signature winter hat is gifted to all students in attendance, adding a special keepsake to the celebration.

Moonlight Breakfast is a student favorite, offering breakfast favorites after hours in the dining hall, complete with an inflatable snow globe for photos, gingerbread house and ornament making, and holiday movies. Scheduled during finals, this event provides a festive and relaxing break from studying.

Bison Fest

Bison Fest is an action-packed, week-long celebration filled with all your favorite campus traditions! From lively bingo nights and cozy fire pits with s’mores to spirited volleyball games, there’s something for everyone. The excitement builds all week and peaks on Saturday with our signature event, past highlights have included concerts, outdoor foam parties, roller skating rinks, and so much more.

Homecoming

Homecoming, hosted by the Alumni Office, is a favorite of all our current and graduated Bison and their families. This is a day to celebrate what it means to be a Bison! From athletic events, special programming, and more, there will be something for all to participate in!

Student Life Awards

The Student Life Awards is hosted annually in April to showcase and celebrate student leaders in our community. These students exemplify the meaning of being a Bison in various areas of campus beyond athletics and academics.

Outstanding Student Organization of the Year

This award is presented to the student organization that has made a significant impact on campus life while demonstrating exceptional leadership development among its members. This award recognizes an organization that not only meets expectations but elevates the student experience through leadership, engagement, and a commitment to excellence. The recipient exemplifies the values of the Nichols College community through the following criteria: 

  • Compliance & Accountability: Adherence to Student Life policies and fulfillment of all administrative expectations. 
  • Leadership Development: Fostering growth, initiative, and leadership skills among members. 
  • Organizational Excellence: Demonstrating strong teamwork, collaboration, and cohesiveness. 
  • Campus Contribution: Actively enhancing student life through meaningful events, programs, or initiatives. 
  • Exemplary Influence: Serving as a role model and standard of excellence for other campus organizations. 
Advisor of the Year

This award recognizes a student organization advisor who exemplifies the spirit of the Nichols College community. Through guidance, mentorship, and unwavering support, this advisor empowers students to grow as leaders while fostering a strong sense of community within their organization. Their dedication challenges and inspires students to achieve excellence, both individually and collectively. 

Event of the Year

This award recognizes an outstanding program developed, promoted, and executed by a student organization. The selected program demonstrates exceptional planning, engagement, and impact on the Nichols College community. This award honors a program that has enriched campus life and set a high standard for student-led initiatives. The recipient will be evaluated based on the following criteria: 

  • Effective Organization & Compliance: The program was well-planned and adhered to all campus policies. 
  • Community Engagement: The event generated strong interest and participation from the Nichols College community. 
  • Student Leadership: The program was entirely student-led, showcasing initiative, creativity, and execution by student organizers. 
Community Service Leader of the Year

This award is presented to a student who exemplifies outstanding dedication to community service and leadership. Through their commitment to making a meaningful impact, they demonstrate compassion, initiative, and a strong connection to both the Nichols College community and beyond. 

Student Belonging Award

This award recognizes a Nichols College student who exemplifies a deep commitment to cultivate a campus environment that emphasizes equity, well-being, diverse perspectives, and inclusivity. Their dedication to fostering a welcoming and supportive campus environment sets them apart as role models among their peers. This award celebrates a student who not only believes in the power of belonging but actively works to create it for others.  

The recipient of this award: 

  • Inclusion: Actively uplifts and empowers individuals from marginalized backgrounds through programming, advocacy, and awareness efforts. 
  • Embodies Nichols’ Values: Demonstrates an unwavering commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive campus community. 
  • Engagement: Participates in multiple facets of campus life, including student organizations, athletics, work-study, and beyond. 
  • Inspires Others: Serves as a role model, both in and out of the classroom, through their actions, attitude, and leadership. 
Outstanding Work Study Student Award

This award recognizes a work-study student who has made a meaningful impact on their office through dedication, professionalism, and initiative. The recipient consistently goes above and beyond in their role, contributing to a positive and productive work environment. This award honors a student whose work ethic and commitment make a lasting impact on their workplace and the Nichols College community. 

 This student: 

  • Exceeds Expectations: Consistently performs at a high level and takes pride in their work. 
  • Demonstrates Responsibility: Shows reliability, accountability, and professionalism in all tasks. 
  • Takes Initiative: Proactively seeks opportunities to improve efficiency and support their team. 
  • Fosters a Welcoming Environment: Creates a positive and inclusive atmosphere within their office. 
Rita A. Gatzke Memorial Student Government Association Appreciation Award

Each year, the Nichols College student body presents the Rita A. Gatzke Student Government Appreciation Award to a faculty or staff member who has made a profound impact on the Nichols College community. The recipient of this honor is nominated by students and recognized as one of the most influential and respected individuals on campus. This award is named in honor of Rita A. Gatzke, who dedicated over 20 years of service to the Nichols College Davis Café, leaving a lasting impression on the lives of countless students, faculty, and staff throughout our community. 

Exceptional Leadership Award: Class of 2026-2029

This award recognizes one exceptional student from each class— 2026, 2027, 2028, and 2029—who stands out as a leader in the Nichols College community. Through their attitude, behavior, and involvement, this student exemplifies enthusiasm, pride, and dedication to the Nichols spirit. The Outstanding Leader of 2026, 2027, 2028, and 2029 award celebrates students who exemplify the values and spirit of Nichols College, setting a standard for others to follow.  

The recipient: 

  • Fosters Campus Pride: Actively encourages school spirit and a sense of pride among peers. 
  • Maintains Academic Excellence: Upholds high standards of learning and academic achievement. 
  • Engages Across Campus: Contributes to various aspects of campus life, including student organizations, athletics, work-study, and more. 
  • Serves as a Role Model: Leads by example both in and out of the classroom, inspiring others through their actions and leadership. 
Bison Trailblazer Award

This award recognizes outstanding first- or second-year students who have made a significant impact on the Nichols College campus. This award celebrates students who have already made a lasting impression on campus and show great potential for future leadership. Multiple students may be honored for their dedication and contributions.  

  • Campus Engagement: Actively participates in student organizations, athletic teams, and community initiatives. 
  • Leadership Potential: Shows promise for continued leadership and positive influence at Nichols College. 
  • Dedication & Commitment: Displays a strong passion for involvement and campus involvement. 
  • Athletic Participation or Support: Engages in or actively supports the college’s athletic community. 
Bison Excellence Award

This award recognizes outstanding Juniors and Seniors who fully embody the mission of Nichols College and the spirit of Student Life. Through their dedication and involvement, these students have demonstrated a strong commitment to personal growth and the betterment of the Nichols community. The Bison Spirit Award celebrates those who leave a lasting mark on Nichols College through their passion, leadership, and unwavering commitment to campus life. Multiple students may receive this honor. 

Recipients of this award excel in multiple areas, including: 

  • Academic Achievement: Commitment to excellence in the classroom. 
  • Campus Leadership: Serving as an influential leader within student organizations and initiatives. 
  • Work-Study Contributions: Demonstrating professionalism and dedication in their campus roles. 
  • Athletic Engagement: Actively participating in or supporting Nichols athletics. 
  • Fostering Inclusion: Advocating for diversity, equity, and belonging within the community.

Bison Legacy Award

This prestigious award recognizes two outstanding seniors who have exemplified exceptional leadership, both academically and through their involvement in extracurricular activities. These individuals leave a lasting impact on the Nichols College community through their dedication, character, and contributions. The Bison Legacy Award celebrates seniors whose influence and dedication will be felt long after graduation.  

The recipients: 

  • Inspire Through Action: Lead by example, motivating and uplifting those around them. 
  • Embody the Bison Creed: Demonstrate integrity, perseverance, and commitment to excellence. 
  • Enrich Campus Culture: Make significant contributions that enhance the student experience and strengthen campus life. 

Senior 48

Senior 48 is a tradition for seniors to celebrate their last days on the Hill as a class. The 3-day program features a variety of activities including a concert, tailgate, an off-campus experience, food trucks, Nichols swag, and so much fun! Most importantly, it is a time to celebrate all you have accomplished with your classmates!

Seniors Dues

2026 Senior 48 Important Details 

Senior dues are a fee to cover the costs of this exclusive 3-day event from April 29-May 1. The $125 cost includes all meals and beverages, transportation, admission to events, and lodging. Senior Dues can be paid via credit card or e-check at nichols.edu/seniordues or the payment can be brought via cash to Student Financial Services, Conrad 3rd Floor, during business hours. (Monday-Friday from 8:30-4:30) Senior dues must be paid no later than April 13 to participate. If you need an extension or have questions, please reach out to Cari Cyr, Dir. of Student Involvement at cari.cyr@nichols.edu or visit Fels 301.

FAQ

Q: I am a commuter, can I stay on campus?

A: Yes! We encourage you to reach out to a senior that is participating in Senior 48 that resides on-campus as they most likely have an extra bed or couch for you to stay on. If you are unable to find someone, reach out to the contact information below for accommodations.

Q: Will I need to pay for anything during Senior 48?

A: No! All your costs for Senior 48 are included in your $125 dues.

Q: Are guests allowed during Senior 48?

A: Unlike other campus events, guests are not allowed at Senior 48, this includes Undergraduate students. All registered students will have a wristband throughout the event which will be needed to attend all events.

Q: What if I do not pay my Senior Dues, can I stay still on-campus?

A: Unless you make accommodations with Residence Life, Seniors that do not pay Senior Dues will not be participating in Senior 48. Therefore, you must move off of campus by 7 PM on Wednesday, April 29.

Q: I am unsure if I paid my Senior Dues, can you check to confirm?

A: Yes! Email the contact information below to confirm your Senior Dues were received.

Q: I am graduating in December 2025 or 2026 and would rather participate in this year’s Senior 48, is that possible?

A: Yes, you may only participate in one Senior 48 experience. If you are graduating early and would like to attend this year’s Senior 48, please reach out to the contact information below.

Family and Friends Weekend- October 16-17, 2026

Join us for Family and Friends Weekend filled with Bison pride as we welcome families, friends, and loved ones to campus! Enjoy a State of the College address from President Bill Pieczynski, athletic events, interactive activities, and plenty of opportunities to connect with our community. From spirited games to fall treats, this special weekend is all about celebrating the people who support our students and make Nichols College feel like home. Wellness and Awareness Programming

At Nichols College, we believe it is essential to provide students with practical life skills to help them grow into confident, capable, and independent individuals both on campus and beyond. In addition, it's important in our community to provide a variety of awareness programming during months. Check out all the ways we provide

Life Skills Education

Student Life partners with a variety of campus partners to provide workshops and tabling events to share important skills with our students.

In partnership with Public Safety, we offer a variety of programs including Winter Car Tips and Preparedness, where we give away free winter car essentials. In addition, we partner during Awareness Weeks such as Alcohol and Distracted Driving, to share our policies and resources available.

In partnership with the Department of Facilities, Student Life hosts an annual Facilities Rodeo, where students learn hands-on home improvement skills like basic carpentry, painting, and minor repairs, all while having fun and building confidence in practical tasks.

Psychoeducational Programming

In partnership with Health and Counseling Services, Student Life offers a wide range of programs throughout the year aimed at promoting student well-being and providing proactive education on important topics. These programs cover areas such as stress relief, time management, coping skills, the impacts of daylight savings, mental health awareness, and more, helping students build the tools they need to thrive both academically and personally.

In the Fall, Counseling Services hosts a major Wellness Fair, highlighting a variety of topics from nutrition and exercise to mindfulness and stress management. Students can explore interactive booths and connect with campus and community resources designed to support their overall health.

Spring Wellness and Awareness Week

Spring Wellness and Awareness Week focuses on providing students with education and awareness across a variety of important topics. Programs during the week highlight autism awareness, strategies for stress management, the dangers of distracted driving, responsible decision-making around alcohol and cannabis use, and resources and prevention strategies related to sexual assault. Through interactive events, workshops, and tabling activities, students are empowered to make informed choices, support one another, and foster a safe and inclusive campus community.
