Undergraduate Online (UGO)

Departments

The Nichols College Undergraduate Online (UGO) program is designed for busy professionals, parents, and individuals with personal or professional commitments that make attending in-person classes challenging.

Our flexible, fully online program is tailored to accommodate the schedules of full-time working adults. We offer two academic pathways within the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA):

  • BSBA in Accounting
  • BSBA in General Business

Both programs are 100% asynchronous, meaning students are never required to attend live classes on campus or via Zoom/Teams. Instead, coursework is completed through Canvas, our Learning Management System (LMS), allowing students to learn at their own pace while meeting assignment deadlines.

Each semester is divided into two 7-week terms, enabling students to focus on fewer courses at a time. Courses are available year-round during Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter intersessions.

Every online student is assigned a dedicated academic advisor who provides personalized guidance from start to finish, ensuring a smooth path to graduation in a supportive and structured environment.

Online Student Course Load and Enrollment Status

Understanding your course load and enrollment status is important for academic planning and financial aid eligibility. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The standard course load for online students is 6–12 credit hours per semester, typically 1–2 classes per 7-week term.
  • Students enrolled in 12 or more credits per semester are considered full-time.
  • Students taking 11 or fewer credits per semester are classified as part-time.
  • A minimum of 6 credits per semester is required to qualify for federal financial aid.
Professional Development Course Options for Online Students

Online students can choose from two Professional Development Courses based on their work experience:

  • SEM-444: Professional Development Seminar (For students with less than 4–5 years of work experience)
This interactive course enhances professional and communication skills to support career growth. Topics include personal branding, business communication, networking, job search strategies, mock interviews, salary negotiations, and goal setting.

  • SEM-445: Credit for Prior Learning (For students with 7+ years of work experience)
This course introduces Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) and guides students in developing a portfolio to petition for academic credit based on prior work experience. While SEM-445 satisfies the SEM-444 requirement, credit awards are not guaranteed and are subject to Nichols College’s final approval (up to 45 credits may be earned).

Course Add, Drop, and Withdrawal Policy

Understanding the deadlines for adding, dropping, or withdrawing from a course is essential for managing your schedule and tuition refunds. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Adding a Course: Students can add a course through Self-Service (Student Planning) until the last day of the add/drop period for each 7-week term.

  • Dropping a Course: Courses dropped by the add/drop deadline are eligible for a 100% refund.

  • Withdrawing from a Course: After the add/drop period, students may withdraw by the course withdrawal deadline. No refund will be issued, and a grade of “W” will be recorded.

To withdraw from a course, please complete the Course Withdrawal Form.

Course Transfer Policy for Online Students

Online students planning to take courses for transfer credit from another institution or platform must submit a Course Transfer Request Form, along with a course description, to the Registrar’s Office at least one week before registration to allow for processing.

A mandatory graduation fee is billed to all degree candidates for each diploma issued. This fee applies to all graduating students, regardless of whether they attend the annual commencement ceremony.

Graduation Process & Diploma Distribution

Two weeks after the end of each semester, the Registrar reviews all degree candidates who have applied for graduation. Students who have successfully completed their graduation requirements are officially conferred their degrees, and the degree information is added to their transcripts.

The Registrar then places an order for diplomas from a specialized printing company. The production and delivery of diplomas typically take 6 to 8 weeks, depending on the printing company’s workload. Once received at Nichols College, diplomas are carefully reviewed for accuracy, repackaged, and prepared for mailing. Before diplomas are released, the Student Accounts Office conducts a financial audit, and Student Financial Services must clear each student’s account.

Nichols College confers degrees in May, August, and December, but a formal commencement ceremony is held only once a year in May. Graduates from August and December are invited to participate in the May ceremony. Diplomas are not distributed during the ceremony; instead, graduates receive a ceremonial diploma cover with a certificate. Official diplomas are mailed separately. The Academic Affairs Office will send detailed information about the ceremony via mail and email to all eligible graduates in early March. If you move, please ensure your address is updated to avoid delays.

To apply for graduation, visit Self-Service, navigate to the Graduation Overview page, and click Apply.
